Your contest is in "Top 5" mode which means that only the designers ranked from 1st to 5th place may submit new designs during this time.
So, in order to see revisions from a specific designer, you simply put one of his/her designs anywhere from 1st to the 5th place (even if temporarily).

Regarding the background, a rule on LogoTournament says:

"BACKGROUNDS - White, Black, or Solid is best. Elaborate backgrounds (ie grunge, painted etc.) are allowed but not recommended."
