This is really where my mind is at. Doing something with smoke is what I assumed would win out but it needs to be a more refined. This holds true for both of your examples

I love that you are thinking outside of the box with the Puffin and Puff the magic dragon, very original but they both should have a bit more of a realistic feel. Fun direction though
