Here is the solution of the readibility problem. I have made the letters in Title case set. So the 'M' has a stand out or prominent shape among the others..to ballance with the O.

Well maybe i have to make the size of the iconic pattern smaller. From my perspective, the logo has a strong image here, with the anomaly between letters. In some case, you can also use only the monarch icon for your marketing campaign.
About using california map...i will try it soon.

My team is only seeing the NARCH with this style logo. What about the shape of the state of California filled with mass monarch butterfly shapes, colors and patterns?

Even simpler could you take an actual circle cut out of a real monarch wing jpeg and use it as the O? No graphics within the O just the natural pattern of the wing?

How about a butterfly inside the o instead of the leaf? Maybe the bottom of the circle is the sun and the butterfly where the leaf is? trying not for the obvious.
