i don't use gradients on the icon, or shines, shadow, etc because the current trend on windows 8 or metro UI is flat with a bit perspective. example is the new windows 8, the color is flat with perspective on the icon. so i choose dynamic representation of the notepad. it has depth and sense of dynamic (touch based support, print, share) because of the perspective. the icon is also an abstract M.
