Here is my initial design ideas for your hockey tourney logo! For the first ones, I went with a classic shield/emblem design—reminiscent of the NHL logo, as well as other popular emblems. I then made a couple subtle differences, most notably with how the hockey sticks are used. (They are in the front on #1 and in the back on #2.) I also made a couple of follow-up designs that incorporate pine trees (#3), including one with a Christmas tree (#4) and some snow (#5). I toyed around with the idea of using a puck for the star, but it felt sacrilegious and looked funny. But I can certainly submit a design with that idea if you wish to see it.
Let me know your thoughts on these, as I think we can really nail down what you are looking for here. Sports tourneys—especially those for a great cause—are my favorite kinds of projects and right up my alley!
