Glad to hear it. Looks like you are drawn to "emblem-style" logos; I'm not sure if you can add that to your brief in the "Styles we are looking for" section after the fact, but you can always add a comment for anyone who might be entering a contest late in the game.
In my years as a graphic designer I have found that people often don't know what to look for in a good logo... they are dazzled by lots of details and colors and those shiny, bubbly logos popping up all over the web. Of course, this is why people hire graphic designers who have nerdily studied logos for years. Smashing magazine has a great article on their website (
http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/08/26/vital-tips-for-effective-logo-design/), but I think the best pieces of advice come from this paragraph:
"A good logo is distinctive, appropriate, practical, graphic and simple in form, and it conveys the owner’s intended message. A concept or “meaning” is usually behind an effective logo, and it communicates the intended message. A logo should be able to be printed at any size and, in most cases, be effective without color."
Just some things to keep in mind:
-Distressed, weathered, or light elements are sometimes very difficult to see once made small enough for a business card.
-Elements using gradients can be extremely difficult to work with in printing. Ask any print shop.
-If you think you will ever need to fax something with your logo on it, consider how it will look in black only. Will it still have the same effect or just turn into a blob on the receiving end?
Please let me know if you need anything else. Thank you and good luck with your contest!
