Wow, im an assat times :/ I will correct it and upload the revised version shortly :) Sorry, i did it first thing this morning, obviously not enough coffee ;)
Ray, you uploaded the wrong version of the logo... the one you gave me was with the shadow slid up the bean, not the original style with the shadow lower down.
Can you do a version where the shadow is slid up a little higher so that the end point on the bottom is not under the crease?
I like it with the light source coming at it from the same approximate angle that the image is tilted, but my wife asked "what if the planet is tilted on it's axis in it's orbit and the light is coming at it from a flat horizontal position."
I said I don't know, but it sounds good, so lets take a gander.
This is my first time using a service like this, so my apologies if I've been prodding with too much stuff.
Those changes with the shading in the middle just didn't come off right with this style.
Maybe the slices technique would work better for the middle to give shading on the sides of the crease, but I'm skeptical, and feel that planet bean is the right composition.
If you want to take a stab at it, feel free, but if not that's cool too.
Beyond that, I'm feeling pretty good about where we are with it.
Only actual tweak (other than maybe trying the shaded idea) would be to nudge the star next to the 'C' ever so slightly to the left a bit... just the teeny-tiniest amount.
I also got a lot more feedback back, and it's pretty unanimous that your representation nails it.
I think after this phase ends tomorrow we have a few days to do minor tweaks and what not right? I'm guessing that is to give things time to settle in and marinate?
After staring at it for a while it made me think of something though.
On a bean... it's creased inwards in the center, and though the shading on the edge is perfect for a spherical planet, it's not exactly correct for the shape of a bean.
This in and of itself is not a problem. I really like it as a planet bean... but it got me wondering what it would look like with the shading on either side of the crease in the center to make it look like it curves inwards.
Personally i prefer this way, but i will upload a couple of the alternate ways to show you the difference. Not all people think alike so you may prefer one of the other options. I will upload again soon :)
To be fair it's hard to judge from the size of the image that I can get on this site... best I can do is a screen cap which is pretty pixelated and blurry when resized, so any kind of assessment on my end is poor.
Waiting on the last of my people to chime in, but the one point a number of folks have made so far was how the slices taken out to make the semi gradient would look when the image is blown up pretty large.
Like would it look like a sliced up edge.
One friend asked if it would be better done as dots instead of slices, or a straight gradient.
What do you think are the pluses and minuses there... or other options for capturing a shaded area other than slices... or do you think that it'll resize just fine, and their concerns are unwarranted?
Would you be able to provide the design with a transparent background so that I could put it on any color, and change the color of just the logo if I needed/wanted to?
Right on, on shirts of the appropriate color it worked great... I just took it out again and changed the bean color to fit the hue of different shirts, and it was pretty spot on.
Great questions, maybe not so easy to answer but here goes :) I personally prefer to keep my designs very clean, so when it comes to printing, cut outs etc, that is is all minimal and easily done. My coffee bean shading, is actually cuts made into the shape, no gradients etc used for shading. I find this is the most asked for way to do it mainly to keep costs and simplicity down :) Hope this helps. I will upload the requested change too soon, im just out of office right now, but wont be long :)
Maybe... and this might just be my eyes... the left star can move a touch down, or down and to the left so that it is kind of a little more centered on the middle of the 'C' in coffee.
The one on the right hits pretty smack in the middle of the 'E'
Definitely like the positioning of the stars better here.
I'm not sure how I feel about the different bean crevice shapes... I like this one the best of the new, but I think I'm still partial to the original. Though feedback was for it to look a little more literal, I like the abstract nature of it.
A quick question/design element about the shading...
I dig it for sure. It gives the design more depth, and almost makes it feel in motion... like the planet is zooming to the right hand side of the screen, but I'm not sure how that will play when printed on a t-shirt.
I did some digging around last night/this morning, and for spot color printing it looks like most places use what is called "half tone" printing where it's a density of dots to give the appearance of shading.
So the question(s) then... is that something that you do in the actual design to represent shading?
Do you just do a natural shaded element and let the printer deal with doing the half tone?
My concern, after breaking out the design from the background color and putting it on different color shirts, is that it comes off less as a shaded area and more of a comb.
I definitely like it better than the solid version though from an aesthetic standpoint
Hi again, great feedback, i cant see any problems with those changes. Unfortunately though, i left my PC a short while back as its late now i the UK, but i will upload some options based on this feedback for you tomorrow :)
So this is the lead design right now, everyone I've shown it to liked it the best.
There are a couple of things I'd like to try and tweak though.
The two stars are pretty close to the ring and imbalance the negative space between the ends of the word coffee, and the ring itself... if they could be tweaked so they're equidistant from their surroundings I think it would give it better balance.
As an experiment... the only semi-negative feedback I got was that the bean doesn't really look like a "bean" ... now I am definitely a fan of the abstracted version, but as a middle ground maybe the crease in the bean could be a little more realistic, while keeping the shape of the bean in its oval form? Like make it a little more like an irregular crevice?
I'm just throwing it out there... maybe it'll be terrible, lol, but I figure it might be worth a look to see if it brings something a little more to the design.
Lastly, if you have anything that's been simmering in your head for any element of the logo, feel free to throw something out there. We've been pretty spot on back and forth, and I've liked some of the things you've done taking my suggestions a step beyond where I was initially thinking.
I don't know how I feel about the line through the ring, might be too much going on, but I dig the way the ring around the outside of the circle makes it look like a gimbal
This looks like a thinner/less bold version of the other font. I definitely prefer the other over this one... when viewed in a small logo it's a little difficult to make out being this thin
Nice font... I'm sure that there are a number of options to go through, but I figure that would be a detail that could be covered once the greater design is set
The proportions get weird with the smaller bean + larger ring... I think with the larger ring you need the larger bean.
Still liking the direction though, and seeing it done is making me consider a few other tweaks I haven't thought about yet... Those are details we can get to later in the process when things start to narrow down
Another thought for having a ring around the planet, and a ring around the design would be to have the planet ring break through the outer ring to give it a 3d effect. That might be too busy/not what I'm after, but it'd be an interesting experiment
I like the font for sure, and the stars are a nice touch.
I'm not sure how I feel about the striping on the left side, but it is an intriguing concept. My one reservation would be how that would print on a tshirt... I'll think about it.
I'd be curious to see it with some slightly different size ratios... like the bean bigger or ring smaller.
I definitely like that ring style... it's pretty spot on

I'm going to give a few people a chance to chime in to see if there are any final tidbits, but if not we'll wrap this bad boy up shortly.

Falls into the same trap that a lot of the submitted designs fell into and turned a bean into an orifice... lol

I tried it out on a bunch of different mug styles, and some shirts and it looks good.
I did tweak it a touch, I made the shaded part:
R 185
G 177
B 134
so it's less on the grey scale and more just a darker variation of the logo color.

I'm going to pass the last 2 designs around this afternoon and get final feedback.
Thanks a ton for working with me on this so far! =)

I think if we just take that one, and tweak the stars into the right position we'll be pretty much set.
