And with those changes how about one with it facing one direction, and one with it facing the other direction?

This looks good. What if the cross was thicker coming on the left side, and extended outside the circle slightly?

Possibly a little more arch in the horizontal beams as well.

Also, maybe some variation in the coloring from top of cross to the bottom of cross? Maybe use that contrast in color with "of Kansas City".

What about making the cross slightly off centered?

Again, this is a great start. I added an attachment to the contest (green logo). Take a look at that cross. It is a bit thin, and too much circle. See what you can do to improve this to look more cross/bridge, less axe, and use that Oswald font. Really like your start though.

This is a great start it looks a little bit too much like a pick axe. Anything you can do to change that? Try google font Oswald
