The chess figures are a good idea. But could you try a symbol that more focuses more on the international reach of the site, i.e. a round symbol for the globe.
I was trying to find parallels, which graphical elements suitable to show the theme. Then chess gave me the answers. War, politics, shah mat, dark horse. I think, its politically correct way to show these things using chess buttons. Hope that you like the idea. Feedback appreciated. Thanks.
