I like the uniqueness of the logo element (vs the text). It could stand on its own or used in conjunction with the text.

I like the "American" theme but would not mind seeing other options with a more "higher education" theme.

#9 looks too much like a crown. Graduation caps are also very overused in this market.
#10 - not sure what the object is. Looks possibly like a short pen with a grad cap - not quite the imagry we are looking for...
