I would like to explain how I came to this concept. First, I tried to keep the overall shape/layout you had so your icon could still be easily recognizable.
Then, I wanted to keept the icon simple (as you wanted) for best transition among different marketing materials (T-shirts, mugs etc).
Now here comes the interesting part: I used parts from a gamepad: I rotated the directional cross button to 45 degrees and I transormed it into an "y". Then I took 2 buttons from the same gamepad, I stacked them and I obtained an "8".
Overall, the resulted icon is versatile, intelligent, simple, straight to the point.
