This feels very young and modern... which does go with the theme of what I'm trying to accomplish with this business. I very much like the nautical/compass feel to this as well.
I don't know that I'd go that dark in any of the media... so the black has definitely set this apart from other designs in the contest. Can we try a shade of dark grey or even see a version with a white background?
Also, would it be possible to add some elements like latitude and longitude? Might play with the compass theme. The coordinates of Nags Head are 35°55′55″N 75°36′54″W.
