Our Ideas & Additional Information
(Sorry they changed the words to Tough instead of difficult )

Have fun with this one – humor or cleverness is appreciated. They want the participants to look at the image and it makes them think and to make them laugh and smile.

Some concepts open to all that they would like to see developed:
- A team of squirrels (or other characters) figuring out how to crack a ‘difficult’ nut
- A fun character doing a “Wyllie Coyote” type computation plan of how to crack the nut.
- a display of different types of tools one could use to crack nuts
- a large animal (elephant or gorilla) standing on a nut to crack it
- a scientific table of nuts and how to crack them
- a scientific table of nuts arranged on a “hardness” scale *take off on Mohs scale of mineral hardness with visuals.

OR some great creative idea to convey the messages noted in the brief and make the viewer stop and think or react to the design.

hope you all will have fun with this one... everyone can come up with clever original ideas for my client to consider. They will be reviewing the entries each day and I will give private feedback along the way... they even upped the prize this year to encourage your participation and creative thinking!

Note I will change the ranking several times a day to remind you that this will be decided by a committee... and so I am just an advisor here... do not use ranking for direction.

may the best ideas and designs win... Carol

Would like to see some with more cartoon like font treatments too.

by the way a macadamia nut is the hardest nut according to a google search...
all kinds of nuts ok - walnuts, coconuts, brazil nuts, macadamia nuts. peanuts too = any type of nut should be open for all to use.
you can include scientific details about nuts:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nut_(fruit)

quote from seriouseats.com
"One nut you have likely never seen in the shell is the macadamia, and for good reason. Unlike opening a peanut or a pistachio, it takes some serious muscle to extract the edible nut from its shell: 300 pounds of pressure per square inch to be exact, making it the hardest nut in the world to crack!"

daily feedback client gave initial thoughts:
A couple are excellent but most of the entries are not funny and clever enough. or colorful
read the brief carefully - we actually thought about the sliders.
it is a shirt design, not a logo... but we have done this before on LT successfully and know that many of you have the skills to make a winning design.
do not copy other designer's ideas... sticks of dynamite is done - get creative and find a different way to crack a nut.
we offered many ideas in the brief that have not yet been tried..
The prize is high enough to warrant your thinking outside the box and getting us a good set of designs to put before the committee.
Do not heed the actual ranking yet... the committee doesn't meet til Wednesday but we will show them the top 10 - 15 ideas.
Please enter good unique designs.

daily feedback: seeing more good options - note ranking is not official until the meeting on Wed. so only pay attention to top 10 now no special order.

Love some of the new concepts shown... thank you to those who closely read the brief and worked hard to get a clever concept.

two ideas they would like to see:
1. a line up of 'bad nuts' make different type nuts into characters - like a criminal line up maybe with ball and chain on some?
2. depict a duel (gun or sword fight or even a ghostbuster type weapon) between a nut character bad guy and a team of science guys.

the 'nuts' are really bad disease issues they are trying to 'crack'
Remember bright / fun / thought provoking images will work best.

I apologize they now want it to say "Tough Nuts" rather than Difficult...
but that can be a last minute change when we get to top 5 will still rank based on feedback from the client.
each day with the final choices later when the committee meets.

daily feedback. they filtered out a lot of designs today to try to keep the ones they like the best... #80 and above were not reviewed yet.
we get feedback from individuals on the team so some of it is mixed messages...So ranking is approximate. the main meeting will be on Monday next week (sorry for delay) but we will narrow to top 5 with possible changes there too after tomorrow.

They are leaning toward more simple designs just now but still like it to tell a story.
we have asked for individual changes in feedback and look forward to seeing those soon.

thanks again - they are looking very good overall. LT designers ROCK!

daily feedback: The management decided that the concept of "blowing up" the nuts is not the best idea in the context of curing diseases... AND they are leaning more and more to the cleaner simple designs. I have tried to make specific suggestions based on their feedback. they eliminated all the ones mostly because they felt they were too complicated. - I will edit this post after my afternoon meeting with them.

UPDATE 5PM PST 4 hours open: we will narrow to the top 5 in the morning PST... but in the meantime I moved a few around who we specifically asked to make changes so they can try it.

One of the team members asked if we could add some technical bio-science images but I told them it might be too late especially since I could not understand it... but you might consider some way putting a DNA symbol in the image? BUT they are stressing Simple. no clutter ...

daily update. in the home stretch they had email votes from many of the team members and they meet Monday late afternoon to make final decisions and requests for tweaking. ANY that are ranked got at least a vote from one team member!!!! the top 5 ranked now have specific requests for tweaking. Have a nice weekend... I will check it of course - but probably wait till after the meeting for the next round of feedback.
lots of talent shown here.

daily update: the meeting to decide is tomorrow afternoon... Thanks for all the last edits I think they will have a difficult decision to make - current ranks are based on a poll of about half of the team so anything can happen when they all vote.

meeting today... not final but they want to see some revisions to Julls59 before the FINAL decision is made. It is a hard choice because of so many great options.... thanks all. Will select winner after they see the last edits.

We are proud that Julls59 won our contest - he worked hard to make our client happy with their choice. There were so many great ideas and illustrations suggested and that is appreciated. The LT design community is terrific! Thank you all who participated. This one was not easy.
