I took the time to review your site and I do understand your need to have a more profession or corporate look and feel to the logo design. I disagree...your organization is community based and that's important to maintain that connection toy our roots. You can still have a brand that is both professional and appeals to the public...
The concept behind my submission is about warmth and empathy with hint of fun...I have a small group of like minded designers who I converse with over project that I do and they all luv the design direction and what it captures the moment people see it.
I am a dog person, born in the year of the dog and my Kali (Husky Shepard) she adopted me. it took me several years to find the right dog for me, since my Simba passed away about 6 years ago. Simba too was adopted and yeah she picked me.

Your looking for a updated identity, colours do that in a big way, same a painting rooms in your home. Dark greens browns etc does not have the uplifting feel of more brighter tones without being overbearing...they are peaceful and calming.
Adjust the colours of your site is easier than you think to match my palette here is easier than you think.
