Our Ideas & Additional Information
Although these are not necessarily meant as examples to copy verbatim the following PDF is a collection of logos we feel are along the same mood/look/feel that we are after.

http://www.cgarchitect.com/test/LogoExamples.pdf

Most all of these examples use a distinctive font and/or have a design oriented mark. We feel they are all refined/contemprary and creative feeling logos.

The name of the website is www.cgarchitect.com (the current site design is very old and we are working on a new modern up to date design, so don't use it as a reference other than to see that type of content we feature.)

We're unsure if we want to add ".com" into the logo itself. You can also play with the "CG" being upper or lower case. It stands for "Computer Graphics".

We want the text component of the logo to be distinctive and "magazine-like". It should not look an off the shelf font (ie Arial etc). The Mark should not be too literal. (ie. compasses, boxes representing architecture etc.) It should be refined and well thought through and be cohesive.

One of the elements to try integrating into the mark, although not necessary, are some organic shapes that reflect some of the more organic/algorithmic types of architecture being designed today. Don't let this latter element limit your idea though, we're open to different ideas. Here are a few links referencing organic and algorithmic architecture.

Hi kib647,

As most of your designs are quite similar I'm going to comments on them in two groups:

For #1 #2 #3 #4 & #14 I really would like to stay away from this box type shape. If architecture is going to be represented litterally like this, I would prefer that it me more organic and less litteral. This font is also a bit too "off the shelf". As we mentioned in the brief, we definetly want a more distinctive font. That could be a less used more unique typeface or one that has been manually edited to be more distrinctive. I also think the use of serifs makes it seem too stiff. I think we need to look primarily at typefaces that are more contemporary looking. Sans-Serif or something less traditional looking.

For #5 #6 #7 #8 #9 #10 #11 #12 through #13 same comments about the typeface. Don't know if I'm too keen on the way negative space is used here. Seems too rigid to me. Take a look at our PDF logo examples. In most of these cases the typeface and mark can stand on their own, rather than integrating the two as much as they are here.

A general note about the name itself. If the "A" in architect should always be lower case if you are going to capitalize the "CG"

Would love to see some more examples.

Scott,
Take a look at the post now. See what happens when I post the # next to the number. It's getting split apart. This does not happen when I comment on an artist's work.

I just want to make sure everyone looks at the PDF link we have provided in our contest brief. This has quite a few examples of the look and feel we are after.

We would like to see a mark that is graphical and somewhat organic in nature. Again see the examples in the PDF. The mark should reflect our business in some way. Here are some notes on the examples in that PDF:

Zipliner & GUBA: I like the mark as it is organic and reminds me of quick line sketches and is architectural in feel.
Pixelcraft: to me is a very distinctive font and memorable.
Metroplex & djuice: both have very distinctive marks which we really like. They are architectural, organic and 3d in nature.
August: has a unique treatement to one of the letters in the name, which makes it memorable and unique. If you opted not to use a mark this type of treatment would be accepable as long as the treatment could be identified with our brand.
Vize: has no mark, but the font has been customized to stand on it's own. This could easily be the font used for the name of a magazine.

I hope that provides some clarification. Please post any questions if you would like additional insight into what we are looking for.

The typeface should also be "magazine-like" and be both distinctive and contemporary and something that people would immediatly come to recognize as the font for our brand. Much like many of the very polular fonts used today (Coca-Cola for example).

Cheers,
Jeff

We'd really like to see someone tackle the organic/algorithmic architecture angle that we provided links to in our brief. I don't know yet if it will work, but most of the entries so far we feel have not really addressed any of the information we've provided in the brief or the comments we've provided to all of the current artists.

Dear CH, could you, please, mark entries you do not like at all as "Not Interested"?

Hi Paull,

I've gone ahead and ranked the concepts. I was waiting to get a few more varations on entries before I did that. There is nothing that we really love just yet, but we're making babys steps there. I will be ranking unique concepts only at this stage as we're not at the point to start looking at minute varations in the logo design. Once we are near the end with a workable concept then we will rank every concept.

Looking forward to seeing everyone's creativity.

Cheers

In addition to seeing some examples with marks, we'd also like to see some artists try just typeface only logos. I think maybe this will help push along the overall concept and try to get people away from typefaces that are not distinctive enough. Examples that could stand on their own without a mark in the PDF include : August, Vize, ink and pixelcraft.

Just a quick note that none of the concepts thus far are really what we are looking for, so I would make sure not to reference any of the currently ranked submissions to closely. I would strongly reccomend reading the feedback we have provided for each of the ranked entries before submitting. We've been leaving a lot of feedback and finding no one is actually reading it.

So everyone can get a better feel of the type and caliber of work that is done in this industry. Take a look at the nominees and winners of our 2009 Industry competition. It's like the Oscars for our industry. There are films and images that you can look at. Hopefully this will be of some assistance.

I've gone ahead and removed a lot of logos from the ranking as too many of them were being referenced without knowing why we kept them there. I'm going to summarize a lot of the feedback I have been leaving on the logos thus far and why we've kept some of the logos ranked for now.

Entry #17: We like this entry becuase it's the only one so far that has a "magazine" feel to it. The mark is not something we currently like.
Entry #51 and #72: We like these entries because they are experimenting with more organic shapes. I don't think either of these have nailed the concept yet, but it's moving in the right direction. Try looking at the two Google links I have provided in the brief for inspiration.
Entry #57: We wanted some people to experiment with a distinctive font. Again this one has not nailed it yet, but it's moving in the right direction.

What we don't want to see:

1. No more concepts with the CG reused in the mark.
2. No ground reflections or gradient coloring on the typeface
3. No boxes or box type shapes to represent architecture.
4. No CAD symbols or marks that identify more with drafting than they do with high end 3d visualization and films for architecture.
5. No Purple colors.

What we do what to see:

1. Either a typeface that is strong enough to stand on it's own through design or manipulation of parts of the typeface OR a distinctive typeface in combination with a mark that suggests at what our industry is about without being too literal and cliche.

At the risk of starting to receiving a lot of new concepts with geometry compasses, I've decided to rank this concept ( #106 ) anyway as we've provided some feedback to the artist about some new concepts.. If you try to use a compass you have to somehow tie it to computer graphics.

I just wanted to let all of the designers know that once the competition is over I will be moving one version of each concept from the not-interested pile and providing a rank. I've been moving them into not-interested in order to ensure there was no confusion over what ideas had elements we liked.

Thank you to all of the designers who submitted to our competition. In the end we got a great logo design and the runners up were all very high quality. Thanks!
