About a year ago I bought an Apple Time Machine as an external automatic backup. I'm SO lucky I did. This morning my external drive (with ALL my work on it) would not wake up! Instead of panicking I just had to access my backup on Time Machine and restore the files I needed immediately. Now I'm going to head out to Best Buy and get a new hard drive to replace the old one and restore all my files.

If you're not backing up regularly I highly recommend you do. An automatic backup like Time Machine works in the background so you don't even have to think about it.

It's nice to see off-the-shelf devices like these helping making a backup process easier, but I've seen such a high failure rate in the field that I just can't trust them for backup.

I've always rolled my own online solution using my co-lo resources, but personally for the last year I've been using one of the paid online services and I'm pretty happy with the trade-offs, which is really only lack of API support and the annual fee. I just paid $55 US for a year with one service and have to say I'm pretty comfortable with the overall security of my data.

Offsite just seems like a good way to go at this time.

I'm going to agree with Akronix. I'm going to signing up for Mozy or similar soon now that I am on a Mac.

Previously my PC I was running a raid setup, and backed up to an external drive (kept in a a cheapo walmart fire safe) which wasn't done as nearly as often as I should.

OB - The truth is I hacked your rig and tried to steal all your Golds. It was my plan to then sell them to newbies eager for Logo Court voting rights! ...;-)

I'm now using Mozy for my iMac. It's nice to know if my computer is stolen, fire, flood, earthquake, etc. that my data is safe.

Yea, I dont usually mess with external backups.

I just raid1 my main HD.

I do have an additional external drive that I got as a gift that I use just as an extra precaution.
