Please note that we're not interested in using the letter "S" in the logo. Also, please try to remain abstract and stay away from any direct visual references to "stones" or "brooks." Thanks.
April 9th, 2009, 1:32am
The overall design should be abstract. Please stay away from direct visual references to houses, buildings, construction, tools, etc.
April 9th, 2009, 8:58am
Thanks to everyone who is submitting! FYI - I will rank towards the end of the contest. We are looking for a fresh, new concept and I don't want to influence your creativity. However I'll be eliminating those logos that don't work for us as we go along.

Hi all... lots of interesting stuff. Please keep the new ideas coming!! Just a note about the symbolism of the logo. While our primary business is in the residential market (houses), there is the possibility that we may do commercial in the near future. Therefore, we don't want the logo to contain an "obvious" house. It can suggest a house, or it can be completely abstract. The idea is to convey the following message:
"We're stable. We pay attention to details. We're clean. You can trust us."
Thanks again!!

how abstract is too abstract?
April 10th, 2009, 12:25pm
The problem with our current logo is that people have no idea what we do when they first look at it. Imagine driving-by a sign on the side of the road and instantly being able to say, "OH! Those people build stuff!"
The logo can be abstract. The company name bold and readable, but the "Construction, Landscape, Design-Build" should be as prominent as the name. The logo should compliment the name, but I'm not expecting people to look at the logo image by itself (without the text) an say, "aha -that's what they do."

Ok... here's my explanation for the ranking:
#26 The logo really pops-out and catches my eye, however the reference to skyscrapers needs to be eliminated. The typography needs tweaking as mentioned in the note above. This look for the logo conveys a great message.
#21 Has the beginnings of the proper typography, however it needs to be tweaked as well. There's no question as to what we do when you first look at this layout (this is good...) The logo needs to be more abstract.
#25 The font/color combination is awesome. The name and by-line needs to be larger and more prominent. The logo is a little busy and confusing and needs to be toned down.
I'm still open to all ideas. Please use these rankings as a guideline. Thanks!!

Oops... #27 should be #27... sorry.
April 10th, 2009, 6:31pm
Let's try that again... #26 should be #27 above...

to wolv: desainnya bagus ... pantesan menang terus he he he
April 11th, 2009, 11:39am
I agree with those of you that have mentioned that the "design-build" is redundant under the name. Therefore, let's change the by-line to "Construction, Remodeling, Landscape". Thanks for all of the input!!
April 11th, 2009, 1:33pm
Wow... there is a lot of really cool stuff coming in - and we're definitely heading in the right direction... Thanks to everyone who's participating!!!
April 11th, 2009, 10:18pm
I will give everyone who submitted feedback - please let me know if I skipped someone accidentally. Thanks!!
April 12th, 2009, 11:45am
Ok... I've re-arranged the rankings. The top 10 are all different designers, and all concepts that could work. However, this is by no means over. We're still waiting for the logo (or variation) that makes us scream "THAT'S IT!"
Please read the comments for each logo to get the direction we're going in. Thanks again to everyone - you all have amazing talent!

First - there's some very nice stuff here and we're very impressed. Thank you all!
Second - I've asked you all for some revisions to ideas that we're seriously interested in. Because of that, and the Easter holiday, I've extended for 2 days. Thanks to everyone who is submitting!

NB : Don't forget a logo that wouldn't work in black and white or grey scales isn't a logo that works. All those fancy gradients and transparencies don't make up for a logo that's just not working. But once you got it right, colours are very important.

MH&cie,
From a business perspective, it's not a great idea to jump in at the end of a competition and state an opinion that, in essence, just supports your design.
Every contest holder has a different set of requirements. For example, a web company would not have much use for a black and white version of a logo. In our case, we're interested in a concept that will jump out on a yard sign, in full-color printed material, on the sides of our trucks, on T-shirts, and on our business cards. Our only use for a black-and-white logo is for our fax cover page, and that's not a part of our marketing effort.
Your designs should speak for themselves. Attempting to lobby a contest holder probably won't score you many points - in credibility, or here on this site.
Just my thoughts.

Well i see that my comment is making some people react !!
First of all dear Kevin, i have discovered this site today as i didn't have access to my office and was surfing on facebook : i saw an ad for Logotournament. I was sitting in bed with a tiny laptop and no mouse for a couple of hours and made a few logos for fun. That's my business perspective, i am working for the World Health Organisation, the UN, the World Business Council fo Sustainable Development etc... and today i coudn't work and had to have some fun. Now that i got that straight, let me say i wasn't lobbying for anyone as i new my designs weren't even going to be considered, being so late in the process, but what can i do, i coundn't turn clocks backwards. And i am not going to win points, so what? what shall i do with points and credibilty. I have more than credibility with my clients, i have trust and mutual conprehension, a common purpose and proven results.
Second : My comment wasn't pleading for my designs, it's part of how i see and do things, true, but i never said that my logo worked: As a matter of fact, i don't do logos, i am more interested in branding and identities as a whole. How long does it take me to discover the identity of a brand and make a logo? at least 20 to 25 hours including all the time speaking with the client to understand him and help him understand his own business. Therefore my logos made in two hours are just a sort of lie, a facade that means something very general vaguely related to the concepts in the brief, a sort of decoration, or a IKEA frame with three pictures of pebbles on a beach that can fit on every wall if you like.
Third : i didn't mean you needed a logo in black and white. It is a reaction to all these pages and pages of logos that have gradients and glass effects when there's no reason whatsoever for having thoses effects appart from : 1. Looking "cutting edge" (but sorry fads don't last) 2. Proving you can pay for a proper designer logo or show off (in the case of the designer) that he masters illustrator and can do the effect that are now possible (but so inappropriate to printing : its a Web 2.0 effect that works for PC screens!!!! ) and that he should try to place everywhere now that he has mastered it. I have a book with the greatest logos ever made, and loads of very old logos are just intemporal, they are still beautiful, not because of their style, but in their essence, the balance of their shapes, of skill of the typography and that's something that was all done without computers, all by hand, and first in black and white ... All i am saying is that when a logo is well balanced, meaningfull, dynamic, inspiring in B&W, then you go ahead, put the right colours on and you end up with a very nice piece of communication. If you take stylish colour effects out of a logo, you sometime realise there is not much to it, that it is nothing but confusion: That's when you know the logo isn't anything else than a fad. I will not point out to any specific logo on this brief, but at a glance, luckily at least the top ten dosen't seem threatened by my comment, you could deconstruct them and still have a strong visual impact. Providing the final file in B&W etc has nothing to do with my comment!
Finally i am not so sure this site is doing any good to the designer community! Mister Kevin, you probably are tirelessly working to win some contracts over your competitors, but do you work against another 100 companies. And wouldn't the time spent trying to get a contract be reflected in the margins you have once you win it. Well in the case of this site. Many designers will either spend hours unpaid which isn't fair, or will give you a makeover of another logo they made for a similar project (check Speedlogo for example, with his Joe Corbi home improvement logo, does it look familiar to you, or were you not worth more than a template design?). I don't know a whole lot about how this site works but i don't feel that this will give realistic expectations to the market in general and it doesn't necessarilly encourage genious. The same happened in the web design with very expensive template sold as "original designs" to accepting clients
As long as your happy...

Max,
Basically you're saying that you joined a logo design site, produced what you claim are "jokes," uploaded your "jokes" to my contest in the guise of real entries, then chastised other designers who made a legitimate effort to produce a quality product.
THEN - when you got called-out for your behavior, you:
a.) listed your resume
b.) reiterated your opinion about logo design
c.) insulted another designer on the site
and d.) proclaimed your disdain for the site.
Your behavior is very juvenile. If you don't want to design logos here then I guess there's no reason to hang around. Doing what you did is like walking into a steakhouse, standing on a table, then proclaiming that everyone in the restaurant is wrong because you like to eat chicken.
Normally I would ignore you. However, over the past week I have seen a tremendous amount of talent and determination from the artists on this site. Your attempt to minimize their work not only insults the designers, but also insults every Logo Buyer. I assume you treat your clients better. At least, for your sake, I hope so.

Exactly, there's no reason to hang around!!! well said. I guess i don't have the determination to throw all my talent, time, energy blindfolded into a contest i am not going to win and call that my job. The name Logo tournament makes one think it will be fun, like a poker tournament, or intense and cruel (like the Gladiators den in the arena maybe?) But in this case the gladiators are the designers and Cesar is our dear Kevin with thumbs up or down to get the logo killed or kept. They've all fought vaillantly, but at the end only one designer is left, the time and talents of all the other having been killed. That's a great concept and the people will love this game. I needed the experience to know if i wanted to be part of this, and i got my answer.
So long, you won't hear from me again!
