Our Ideas & Additional Information
Cooper's Ferry Partnership (CFP) is an economic development agency in Camden, NJ. CFP focuses on long-term policy, infrastructure, real estate, and community planning to revitalize the historic, post-industrial city. As a part of its mission to make Camden a better place to live, work and invest, CFP strongly believes that development is more than bricks and mortar: it is also about activating and programming parks to create safe, civic spaces. One of the city's most central parks and open spaces is Roosevelt Plaza Park.

Roosevelt Plaza Park (RPP) is located at the crossroads of three essential business corridors in downtown Camden and at the doorstep of City Hall. The historic 75,000 sq. ft park reopened in June of 2012 after the demolition of mixed-use building erected in 1955 to replace the original plaza built during the New Deal.

As a safe, well-lit and well-maintained park, RPP has generated positive feeling among downtown residents, employees, and visitors. However a lack of park amenities has created a park that people walk "through" rather than "to." Given the park's location, approximately 15,000 students and 12,000 locals and businesspeople walk past or near the park each day. This critical mass of people from diverse socio-economic backgrounds has the potential, if engaged, to stimulate Roosevelt Plaza with the vital social capital needed to revitalize Camden's urban core.

Inspired by examples of new, active public spaces in other post-industrial centers including Bryant Park in NYC; Military Park in Newark, NJ; Campus Martius Park in Detroit; The Porch at 30th Street Station in Philadelphia, CFP seeks to implement high impact, temporary amenities to make Roosevelt Plaza a central destination for bikers, pedestrians, residents, and employees in the City of Camden. To help build up the brand identity of the park, CFP would like to create a logo and watermark for RPP. Similar to the aforementioned parks, it is the hope that building up a brand and image for the park will help people identify with the space and encourage people to spend time in the park.

The goal of adding branding and temporary amenities to the park is known as "placemaking." The purpose of placemaking is to enhance a sense of place by adding features that help people better identify a pace. CFP seeks to add moveable furniture and planters that will reflect the character of the park. Furthermore, the architecture of the structures in the park will reflect the neoclassical, industrial style of Camden City Hall, built in the late 1920s. We are looking for a logo that ode to the historical time period when City Hall was built while staying young, modern, and urban.
