What We Do
PhotoRocket makes sharing photos between family, friends, coworkers or other groups easier and faster than you could possibly imagine.

PhotoRocket is a new company - to be officially launched in 2009. A web-based service that enables photo sharing in an entirely new, cool, easy, elegant way.
Industry
Internet
Color Preferences
preferred base colors: blue-to-dark-purple. or orange. secondary colors: be creative and smart.
Our Ideas & Additional Information
The rocket element should be key. "Retro" style rocket imagery is highly desired - pre-1960's. Abstract preferred, but elements such as rivets, flames, vapor trails are fine if it does not make the logo too busy or complex. Imagery of a camera or photograph (but not a strip film) could work as well, but also should be kept minimal and abstract. The rocket element should be more prominent than any photo element, if you include the photo element at all (would definitely like to see some rocket-only logo ideas too). Ok for rocket element to be retro, and photo/camera element to be modern. Again, abstract and simple to portray "cool and easy". As for fonts: also fun element, but keep it simple. Imagery and font should probably be equally emphasized, but very open to creative combinations. Logo should appeal to both 20-50 year old constant computer users who react well cool things, as well as 50-80 year olds who ract well to simplicity and will have positive reaction to the retro style. NOTE: Do NOT use what is currently on www.photorocket.com as a reference - it is only a temporary holding page until a logo design is chosen.

Forgot to clarify something regarding the name: Yes, the name is one word, with a capital R for rocket. Just as the name shows throughout this contest.

Also: OK for hoto and ocket to be either lower case or small caps. Will possibly end up choosing one treatment or the other along the way as submitted logos arrive. Open to trying both ways to see which works best.

Happy to see early interest for the PhotoRocket contest!

Re entries 9 thru 11: Concept is interesting, but not the font - fancy font not desired - simple is better.

Although blue + organge is a nice combo, would be good to see blue-based and orange-based ideas separately.

Like the simpler, less complex, less wavy, less classy fonts, as well as the mixed thin/bold colorX/colorY treatment as seen in Mogeek's #3 - very effective for the PhotoRocket name.

Mogeek: Maybe try #3 font treatment in #4?

AngryPuppy - very creative, but way too complex with #16.

Retro_Metro Steve - ok concept with #20, but the microscopic Rocket element does not meet desire for balance of name + graphical elements.

Dorsey Design - #15 looks interesting, but a little too busy with the stars.

IDEAZDEN - Paper airplane cute, but definitely must be a rocket.

The reason #14 is ranked well is because it is well-balanced, is simple in concept, has a strong font, and the rocket element portrays movement in a very obvious way. Also easily allows for animation possibilities, ie: rocket moving into the logo to a resting place, or taking off. No specific plans to do such an animated logo, but a logo that allows such flexibility would be nice.

If I could change any of my

Good stuff - excited to see it evolve...

I was kinda thinking that too. But there is always hope, right? Thanks for your feedback, will probably try again!

@PhotoRocket - nice, specific, and timely feedback. You're sure to get something you'll be very happy with because of it. Cheers.:)

Before we all get completely stuck on the the swooping rocket above with a vapor trail: I am not stuck on that concept. It IS a great concept and might be the best direction for the logo, but would still love to see a photograph element included, if it's possible to work it in with the rocket. Not exactly, but sort of as tried in #11. If something good pops up with a rocket AND a photo, great. If not, rocket alone is how it will go.

The two-color PhotoRocket treatment is definitely the way to go. If anyone has other ideas for secondary color to blue, other than orange, feel free to try.

There WILL need to be a "TM" on the name in the logo. Feel free to include it at this point to test full effect, but including it now it not mandatory, and will not affect ranking at all.

Feedback re some of the "not interested" logo's:

#26 #27 #28 - not looking for a character - just a very cool rocket

#7 - some potential with that concept - would like to maybe see more in that vein - but no slogan please

#40 #41 - like the basic idea, but you didn't use either of the requested base colors - also don't like the K swish treatment

#42 - and others in general that are using gradients for the "PhotoRocket" word element: Best to now stick with solid colors for all lettering - no gradients.

Reasons for no interest:
===================
#47 - too busy; don't like stabbing of photo; circular shape not as good as the wide concepts
#49 - fancy font not desired (see previous comments)
#50 #51 - film strip element not desired (see "our ideas")

Any light blue concepts: maybe try darker blues? Darker, non-gradient name over white background looks better from here.

stormbighit re #48: Good concept but maybe no gradients at all?

Dorsey Design re #36: Like it but maybe larger rocket? Try different fonts?

bluejet re #39: Like it a lot, but maybe try blue base? Maybe try different font treatments/etc?

Mogeek re #29: Not obvious that the photo is a photo, especially at expected use size.

Sh1's #32 is ranked top now because the rocket has a great retro look, simple layout, portrays fun yet stability, doesn't make the viewer think. Also very much like the two different treatments used for the photo and rocket text.

*** IF it is possible to add in a photograph element into the styles seen in the top ranked logos, great. ie: maybe the word Photo could seem to be the subject ON a photograph? But if not, or if that makes the logo too complex oro busy, the rocket is more important and can stand on its own. ***

Reason for no interest:
==================
Mogeek re #61 - can't tell they're photographs - looks like a fan - definitely should have a rocket element and not only photos.

aremmai re #63 - nice idea, but can't tell that those are photographs.

Dorsey Design re #64 - the stars are making the overall logo too busy (for a primarily web-targeted and iconic logo), and the photograph element doesn't look enough like a photograph - looks more like a painting. But the basic concept might be a good one.

NOTE: In general, the polaroid photograph format obviously makes a huge positive difference in indicating it's a photo, so I'd stick to that idea for any photograph ideas going forward.

Many of these logos are looking great!

Mogeek - sorry you withdrew. Was planning on writing to say the rocket is reall good but please try different ideas for the vapor trail. Monotone on vapor seems to work well in other designs. Also, liked your font/color combo's quite a bit.

Dorsey Design re #70 & #72 - Nice design, but the vapor above is odd re perspective. Maybe keep the vapor coming from below or from side/s?

bluejet - the nameplate concept in #56 is a nice idea, but so far like the open space concepts better because open space more easily portrays the rocket "moving". Might have said this before re #39 but will say again - love that basic design - different font treatments (including a blue or other darker color for photo) would be great to see. I know the color slider was more toward gray, but more color might be more suitable.

Ok, some new feedback:

bluejet - Like the variety of simple concepts, and really like blue for the base rocket color. Which is why i left #84 and #76 on the list. Don't like the banner or film strip (film not desired for design element) but putting that blue rocket into #39, and maybe simplifying the jet stream (or playing around with it otherwise) could make #39 top rank.

Paull - Do like the latest blue-base rocket quite a bit. If you could take #77 and make a version that looks more like a polaroid photo, that could make a huge difference. It seems that without that polaroid "look", it's hard to tell that the photographs are actually photographs.

brad2 - #44 went from the "not interested" pile, to ranking, to a higher ranking. The idea is growing on me, and feedback from a few others here are quite positive. Might be a little too busy overall, but if you have other mods on that you're interested in submitting, would love to see them.

sh1's #57 and #62 are still of great interest. Re the PhotoRocket element: Bolder font and/or darker shades and/or capital P/R (or small-caps) might be nice to see also.

Paull & everyone else: Just for reference, here is the "Polaroid" look I'm referring to - the look that would be best to help viewers of the logo have instant recognition that the photo is actually a photo: http://tr.im/20kh

#62 by Sh1 is the closest to "Polaroid reality" so far - which is one of the reasons it's ranked high.

The reason the Polaroid concept is important is because the photograph is pretty much blank - so the photograph element can easily look just like a piece of paper, or something other than a photograph.

Hope this helps. And apologies if this is becoming too much information(!).

Some feedback:

bluejet - would love to see #107 without the photo too. Also, would LOVE to see #39 with jet stream wrapping name instead of on top of it? And maybe with blue base instead of only orange base?

brad2 - rocket in #101 is beautiful, but maybe a little too complex. Maybe simplfy? Also, white background is key for comparison to other designs, please. Logo will be appearing on white background for sure.

sh1 - the series of dark photo, as in #97, interesting idea but the white photos are much better. Also, re your #94 #95 #96 series - like the darker colors but would prefer no gradients there.

Thanks, designers!

A few more people on this end have been watching the entries recently, so here are some combined thoughts and feedback - hopefully this will be helpful to everyone:

brad2 - you have many fans. #44 is high on some lists here. the highly retro and playful aspect catches eyes, and so would love to see variations on that concept. The only downside is that the rocket, unlike other ideas, doesn't show "movement" - as in moving/sharing photos. #101 is also very high on lists - higher than 44. Many like the rocket shooting out of the "o", as well as the 3D stylized rocket. But the dark background needs to go away, as it would likely never be used on such a background - so it's hard to judge until that change is made. #100 is great also with the primary red theme - but the red-white-blue coloring is not desired. Maybe try a 2nd color other than blue on #100? Yours could easily hit the top with a few more tries.

bluejet - you also have many fans. the simple, flat cut-out style of your rockets is as interesting as brad2's highly 3D style. Would love to see the blue rocket in #112 with gray, orange or other non-red fins, and most importantly with other vapor treatments - including such as the one in #39. Maybe even with like brad2's #101? There's a LITTLE concern with the vapor trail possibly reminding people of the Nike swoosh - not a bad association, but don't want people to think at all about shoes, or about Nike.

sh1 - really nice ideas, but right after this writing you'll be moved out of the top spot with the growing competition. Something that could make a big difference: A sharper/harder version of the rocket. When compared to the great treatments from bluejet & brad2, soft is seeming less interesting. The font you use should probably be more like the other top designers also - sharper edges & such. You were first to do the basic rocket-flying-overhead concept, but others are refining on that really well. Possible to sharpen your rocket and not ruin the playful basic feeling? Would be gret to see these changes. Also: 1 window vs 3 is the way to go.

Dorsey Design - Also really good ideas. But most of your rocket designs - by design, I'm sure - have a soft and almost "blurry" look. Which is not highly desired, especially when compared to the sharper edges on other designs. This is why yours probably haven't gone to the top of the ranks yet. Your new ideas, such as #92, are sharper and more desired.

Basic feedback for EVERYONE:
- There's a very high chance the website, and everywher else the logo will appear, will be on a white background. So no need to try other backgrounds.

- The photograph element seems to be more difficult to get right. Expectations are not super high on that, but if you can pull it off, GREAT.

- I realize the Contest Brief states this logo will be used on web, print, mugs & t-shirts. But let's focus completely on web, if you're not already completely focused there. It's where this logo will be used in its most important role - so forget the print, mugs & t-shirts for othe rest of this contest.

Thanks everyone! Good process we have going here...

brad2 - still hoping you'll come back & remove the dark background so that we can see how #101 looks with a white background. As well as other variations on your #44.

bluejet - one final request for your design #146 - please use the dark blue from #112? But stick with orange/rust/yellow for the 2ndary color. Both concepts are equally popular over here!

Will provide feedback again on Thu afternoon/evening. Then maybe (hopefully) again Fri morning an hour or so before the contest ends.

And thank you, bluejet, for the dark blue version.

Thanks, Brad2. Please do keep the fonts float - no gradients or additional effects needed. Looks much better on white background.

bluejet: One more thing please: #112 with different jet stream/s? Such as that in #150? And maybe others? Looking very good.

Will still gladly consider any other newcomers and new concepts. But the ones in the top 8 slots right now are all great(!). A few people here will be voting on the top 8-to-10 up to and after submission deadlines. Winner will be announced by mid-day Saturday.

Thanks again everyone! Will provide more feedback here as needed - it ain't over yet...

BLUEJET: still would very much like to see #150 with colors from #112. That could keep you at top spot. Without that change, voting is very tight here.
