What We Do
Mulligans Flat Woodlands Sanctuary is an outstanding example of Yellow Box-Blakely’s Red Gum grassy woodland (an endangered ecological community), that is being restored to sustain a range of native flora and fauna, to provide excellent educational and eco-tourism opportunities and to inspire a conservation ethic amongst Canberrans.

Color Preferences
The designer has discretion with colour use, but note that a colour scheme has been adopted for Canberra Nature Park (CNP) and has been used in its signage and brochures (see further information). The designer may obtain ideas for colour schemes from the imagery of native vegetation included in the links under further information.
In the CNP logo, bright green (Pantone 5767) reflects the vegetation, grey (Pantone 5507 U) represents the bark of the eucalypts, and yellow (Pantone 111U) represents the cured grasses. Felt Tip and Ariel have been used for CNP publications
Our Ideas & Additional Information
About Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary
Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary will have major conservation, education, recreation and tourism benefits, which will be developed over time. The sanctuary allows us to:
• maintain a feral (predator) free area of 485 hectares in an Yellow Box-Blakely’s Red Gum grassy woodland and (a critically endangered ecological community).
• restore woodland habitats and ecological processes to be more representative of the original pre-1750 state.
• create a nationally significant box-gum woodlands conservation project based upon research and learning, informing innovative conservation management practices.
• manage in a sustainable manner, the native mammals within the sanctuary
• support the reintroduction of some locally extinct animals and plants that may support woodlands recovery.
• facilitate links to community, education, recreation and tourism groups.
• share the knowledge of sanctuary construction, management, research and restoration.
The Sanctuary is one of 34 reserves interspersed amongst the urban areas of Canberra that are collectively known as Canberra Nature Park (CNP). The reserve is in the north-eastern corner of the ACT and is adjacent to Goorooyarroo Nature Reserve to the south, NSW to the east and north, and the new suburbs of Forde and Bonner in Gungahlin to the west.
Mulligans Flat and the adjacent Goorooyarroo Nature Reserve together protect the largest remnant of the Yellow Box-Blakely’s Red Gum grassy Woodland (a critically endangered ecological community – see websites below). This ecosystem was extensively cleared and modified in the past to create pasturelands for stock. Before it became a nature reserve in 1995 Mulligans Flat was managed for farming and grazing.
There are usually magnificent wildflower displays in spring and early summer on the slopes and plains of the sanctuary. It is also recognised by the Canberra Ornithological Group (COG) as one of the prime bird watching sites in the ACT. Threatened bird species at Mulligans Flat include the Brown Treecreeper, Superb Parrot, Painted Honeyeater, Hooded Robin and White-winged Triller.
Recreational activities include walking, cycling and particularly observing birds. There are several cycling and walking trails including a self-guide bird walk and accompanying brochure. A Visitor Orientation Display (VOD) near the western entrance to the reserve provides information on nature, Indigenous and pioneer history and recreational opportunities.
Some additional phrases (beyond ‘restoring, learning, inspiring’) that describe the theme we want to convey through the logo are: ‘Glimpse of the past’, ‘Restoring the past to enhance our future’, ‘Restoring woodlands to enhance our future’, ‘A window to our natural history’, ‘Conservation through knowledge’, ‘Integrating research and restoration’, ‘Unique location, unique restoration’, ‘Leading the nation in woodlands restoration’, ‘Learning to live with our woodlands’, ‘On our doorstep’, ‘Research led restoration’.
If the image of a tree or woodland (trees without canopies touching) (or a derivation of these) is used the image should reflect a typical Australian tree (Eucalyptus) and NOT a European or north American tree.

The potential winner of the Logo Tournament competition should be aware that the client has been considering enlisting the services of the graphic designer that developed symbols for other parts of the ACT’s parks and open space areas, including ‘Canberra Nature Parks’. Due to its substantial cost, this option is a last resort and will be sought if no appropriate Logo Tournament entries are submitted.

Initially I will post general comments here but as things get interesting I will swap over to posting comments Privately to designers as I begin to rank them.
COULD ALL DESIGNERS PLEASE READ THE PUBLIC COMMENTS AS THEY GIVE A LITTLE MORE GUIDANCE TO WHAT WE ARE WANTING.

Thankyou. Generally this style is reasonable.
We are thinking that the grey lines in the sky are quite dominant and we are in two minds if they are what we want to keep this going anyway, maybe lighten the lines off a bit.
Your trees are the same, in Australia all eucalypt trees are all different and definitely not like pine trees or many 'look alike' european trees. Try and make the shape of trees or even just one tree look quite different. Check out pictures of Australian Gum (Eucalypt) Trees.
The lines in the brown (dirt) section of the image looks like 'ploughed' land. Our sanctuary is not that, it is a grassy natural ecosystem. Maybe find a place for grasses or shrub like shapes.
Can we please remove the words Parks Conservation and Lands. It is the Sanctuary compnoent we are trying to emphasise.

Thankyou. Your design has potential.
We need to change the trees, Eucalypt trees in Australia are all different, these trees look all the same, check out photos. Try to get the eucalypt leaves shape just right, maybe they are a little longer and narrower, the colours need to be more realistic, say greener. The blue grey does not quite do it for us. Also the leaves muddle with the background trees and the image is very busy. Can we also remove the words Parks Conservation and Lands.

Thankyou. We did think this image looked a bit like a whale or fish swimming under the stars. But please keep going as we do like some parts of your concept. The grasses, leaf and eucalypt flower are all good concepts and we would like you to think about them again. Maybe a eucalypt tree can be brought in somewhere? Remove the words Parks Conservation and Lands.

#4
We do like the curved bit with the two trees. Can you try and round off the part on the right hand side so the curve blends into a ‘hilltop’. The lines in the sky now look a bit zebra like. Maybe go back to the #1 style and fade them off a bit so they are less dominating. We would like to see a few variations here.

#6
We like this one too but please change the lines (clouds) in sky as per comments for design 4. Maybe enlarge the bigger tree a bit too.

#8
Sorry we do not like this one much. The egg shape does not work for us, the straw with leaves on top look nothing like our environment (looks like a wind turbine), the lines in the ground look like ploughed land. We are a National Park and do not have ploughed or tilled land. We do not want the words Parks Conservation and Lands on our logo. Good to read previous public notices to get a handle on this requirement. We do not like the dominance of the blue grey colours.

#10
Sorry do not like this one. We are not about structured trees that all look the same. The Australian environment is not like that.

#11
Sorry this one has lost us now and we do not like it. Maybe have go at a different tree shape, this tree is far to ‘busy’ in our opinion. Maybe the stars could be in shape of the ‘southern cross’ constellation? The leaf shapes now look a little like a spoon or srving bowl.

#12 and #13
Sorry do not like these designs. The leaves look like hands grabbing at random stars or a tree that seems a bit too ‘busy’. The trees need to be more simplified.

#14 #15 #16
Sorry do not like this design. It is too similar in shape to our existing Parks Logo and the parrot looks like a ‘grandpa’ parrot, sorry but that’s the best description we could give to it as we are quite ‘picky’ with what we like and dislike

SORRY FOR DELAY IN COMMENTING I HAD A BUSY WEEKEND HERE IN AUSTRALIA

#17 to #21
Sorry don’t like this much but maybe try a few changes. What we don’t like is the road or river up the middle, we don’t have rivers in the sanctuary and we don’t want to put a road on an image. Our eucalypt trees are not like what you have designed, please check out websites in brief. Also please remove the Parks Conservation and Lands words, we do not want them on this logo. The lines on the ‘ground’ look like ploughed lines in a field and we do not have that. Also can designers stay away from ‘black’ colour generally.

#22 #23
We don’t mind #23 but the lower section of the design still looks like a beached whale. Maybe try cutting the braod leaf off flatter at the base as the image does not have to be circular.

#25
Thankyou for your design. We like this style of design but may change the emphasis on words around a bit so Mulligans is not the main word. We would very much like to see several different styles of thinking on the wording. If you want to have a go at changing style of different words then link the words ‘Mulligans Flat’ then ‘Woodlands Sanctuary’ differently. Can you have a look also at changing some colours, maybe try a dark green on the trees. We will quickly let you know if the colours dont do it for us.

DESIGNERS PLEASE NOTE WE WILL PROBABLY BEGIN TO ‘RANK’ DESIGNS IN THE NEXT TWO DAYS.

IT IS A PUBLIC HOLIDAYTODAY IN PARTS OF AUSTRALIA TODAY – NOT A HOLY HOLIDAY BUT A HOLIDAY FOR A ‘HORSE RACE’ The Melbourne Cup. COMMENTS TODAY WILL BE BRIEF…..

#26
This is looking OK, leave it for now as we will rank entries tomorrow for the first time.

#27
Also this is looking OK, leave it for now until ranking.

#29 #30 #31
Sorry this does not do it for us, trees should not be all the same, remove ‘Parks Conservation and Lands’ words, the oversize yellow sun on black sky is just not us, the yellow colour of the hill is not quite right. Change the ‘font’ please. Maybe replace the shrubs along the hill with grasses.

#32
This is OK, can you please make the grass blades thinner and more of them in the ‘clump’, don’t make more grass just replace what you have designed, you proportions are otherwise very good, the grasses in the Woodlands of Australia are often quite thin blades unlike the tropics where they are thicker. Give it a go and we can see how it looks, thankyou.

#33
Leave this one, as we prefer variations on #32 more.

#34
We prefer #27 as this one sort of looks like a boat sailing on a wave.

Thankyou for the design. However it is far from what we are looking for. Please scan thru my previous comments and have another go if you wish. Some things we do not want are: remove words ‘Parks Conservation and Lands’, don’t want anything that looks like a river in our ‘river less’ environment, green grassy hills are not quite as it is in Australian Woodlands, trees in Australia are not all the same shape.

#36, #37, #38
This is good. Please leave it there for now as I will be speaking with colleague working in our ‘interpretation dept’ tomorrow and we will offer more comment and do some ranking. Oh by the way there is no S in Woodland, just minor comment. Just one thing has come to mind, could you please change the font in #36 where all the words were the same font, maybe try a couple of different colours/styles. It may be a bit cluttered but try adding the words ‘restoring, learning, inspiring’. It may muck up your logo but have a go anyway if you do not mind.

This style of design does not do it for us. The image we want needs to relate unmistakeably to the Woodland and landscape or environmental factors explained in the brief.
