What We Do
BabbleCam is a live webcam social community where groups can babble on face-to-face with each other about similar interests, hobbies & passions.
Industry
Internet
Color Preferences
We are very open to all colors, but would like to minimize to only a few strong colors, and have a Web 2.0 look & feel. Reflection, gradients and/or shadows all can be utilized to make logo pop. White Background is preferred, but should work with other background colors as well. What colors best communicate - Fun Video Chat/Webcam/social networking?
Our Ideas & Additional Information
The design needs to be eye catching, memorable yet also somewhat simple. It needs to instantly telegraph the message – of connecting and talking with others via live Web Cam / Video Chat. Not just playing videos like other sites.

We’re open to seeing different variations of the BabbleCam logo. WordMark – the words ‘Babble’ & ‘Cam’ can play well off each other with the right font.
In contrast, we’d also love to see someone develop an Iconic/Pictoral service mark of a web cam, or person video chatting and babbling on, with the words “BabbleCam” in a smart web 2.0 font, that could make the logo more visually appealing.

We’re open to the possibility of something active as well as static.

Logo to represent a fun service, but not too slap/sloppy/clever, but professional in appearance

Thanks to all for the wonderful job you did!!

Especially our top 4 designers who did everything we asked!

**************************ATTENTION ALL - FINALIZED COLOR DECIDED ON JUNE 6th **************
PLEASE SCROLL TO BOTTOM & READ BEFORE SUBMITTING ALL NEW DESIGNS!

Thanks to everyone for submitting your designs!! We love the different ideas and keep them coming based on the following feedback:

#2 – Like the idea of multiple users concept with the eyes. Also, we are concerned that using the external “web cam” look will probably become outdated technology as more and more computers have the webcam built in. What other ideas do you have?
#4 – Really like the idea of the built in computer webcam look however, the outline of the computer screen seems too heavy and would like to see a thinner version. Like the idea of the color separation with the text and with that don’t need to capitalize the “B” and “C”. Without the color separation the “B” and “C” would need to be capitalized. Like the idea of the lips/tongue look and that it’s within the computer screen, which implies human touch with high tech!! One limitation of this logo is that it does not imply multiple users in conversation so we'd like to see different options showing multiple users within the screen.
#8 – Like the italicized font look however, would like to see a thinner version of font used in #9, without black.
#9 - Like the font type in a thinner version, without black.

Hi LG, thanks for your question. I've asked our marketing guy to take a look at your question so we can properly respond. Will have an answer for you ASAP!!

Hi sbharank. Just want to follow up on what LG Design said. We find that a lot of clients do need a bit of education regarding logos, and it's great that you have someone to go to with questions. My advice would be that any logo should be reproducible in black and white only. Also note that LogoTournament requires that all designers provide a client a black and white version of the logo that wins the contest if the client requests it.

Also, for your reference, here's an example of a logo that is perfectly recognizable in plain black and white, and the types of changes it has seen over the decades (both the look and feel of the logo mark itself and the accompanying text). This is a great logo. http://chrisglass.com/journal/images/2007/0926-cbs-logo.gif

Hi Lindsey, thanks so much for your feedback, advice and the cbs link - very helpful. We'd love to see what ideas you have for our logo once we provide more detailed feedback, per my note below.

Hi LG, Our marketing guy wanted to clarify this with our hierarchy of needs:
1) Web use is the most important element at this time and needs to be the driving force for the design.
2) Other media uses are not the primary concern at this time and we will address later as certain elements will be removed to meet those needs, i.e. gradiations, etc.
3) Having a one or two color spot logo will be important for other uses at a later time, which may be a black and white version as Lindsey referenced, or the use of two primary colors - i.e. blue and orange.
4) I hope this answers your question and please continue to let me know if you have any other concerns.

TO ALL DESIGNERS, our marketing guy had some unexpected travel come up and was not as accessible as planned since our contest launched to provide daily feedback. With that said, he will be back Saturday morning at which time we will provide much more detailed feedback and an updated ranking. I apologize for this unexpected situation and GREATLY appreciate the new designs and your continued interest in our contest so please keep the ideas coming!!!

#14 - We love the use of the blue and orange for the text.

#26 - We like the thinner outline on the monitor and please show us a version of this logo with the blue/orange text colors as seen in #14. Also, use the same orange color for the webcam dot in the monitor outline. Thanks!!

NEW DIRECTION!! PLEASE READ BEFORE SUBMITTING NEW DESIGNS!

Macro – level NEW Art Direction:
The logo/brand of BabbleCam requires two strategic elements.

1) A stylish web 2.0 font making BabbleCam type memorable. We've come to like the coloration Orange/Blue per #17. Color Only, not design. But are still open to variations of these colors.
• The breaking up the words #26 by dotwoman make “BabbleCam” memoriable.
• But we haven’t yet found the right font for the brand essence. Please keep submitting.

2) An Iconic symbol – which is simplistic, stylized, memorable.
• The symbol needs to quickly communicate Multi-people live cam chat rooms, face to face to face interacting, or social COMMUNITY. Ie, how would you make a logo for a site that interacted with others in a similar manner as craigslist, or facebook – but with a webcam. This site isn’t one to one web cam, but multi-people 4+ talking in one room.
• The illustration needs to tell a story above and beyond what the name already implies.
oTherefore do not show illustrations of talking, since the word “Babble” already clearly communicates this. Ie no mouths.
o In addition, don’t show Just an illustration of a Web Cam, as the word “Cam” already makes reference to this.
-The icon, should not just literallly show an external web cam. The Cam can be there, but should be a in a subdue manner - very stylized.
- Possibly design an ABSTRACT webcam utilizing shapes, that symbolize a webcam – ie Stickam’s logo http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3565/3328012063_f933d35ab2.jpg - Please don’t copy this logo, as they are a indirect competitor.
- An Eye, or Cam symbol can be incorporated into the illustration – just not be the focal point.
o This illustration should be a quick read, very simple – and have a web 2.0 look and feel with gradients or shadows to make it pop off the screen.

Tactical suggestions, based on artwork submitted prior to Saturday May 30th:

Thus far concept #26 – dotwoman has done a good job strategically communicating “Community”. We’d like to have all current artists, as well as any new ones review this concept – and submit their own interpretations of using a screen with multiple users inside. Here are the changes we’d like to see you make that will get you ranked closer to #1:
- Babble communicates talking, therefore we don’t need mouths – rather stylized people figures/talking heads.
- We’d like to see variations on the layout of the screen. Big & small screens. Inner boxes could be circles, rectangles, or a combination of – similar to news channels when the host talks to expert people in other cities – and there are 4+ talking heads on the screen at any one time. But there should always be 1 larger host/moderator.
- Both Screen, web cam eye, and people should have a web 2.0 feel/coloration –make it less cartoon looking. Please remember this is a sophisticated technology – yet easy to use, for the masses, website. Therefore the logo should represent a larger business, and not a small shop.
- What makes this concept interesting is it’s not about the Camera, but the screen and the shapes or people in the screen– as that’s what you’re interacting with more than the 1997 looking webcam.
- Logo needs to be more simplified and supporting of the name “Babble Cam”, not dominating over the name. Right now #26 fights too much with the name Babble Cam

Other concepts that fit this new strategy:
#20 – Danoe. This logo is iconic, simple, and has an inner essence of global community.

Regarding the Cam – I think the eye of the cam quickly communicates and supports the “Cam” in babblecam. Examples that are doing this well are #20, #23 and #28 (eye only not overall design)

We hope this new Macro strategy will help everyone and inspire a new direction!
I will be now updating comments on this page – multiple times daily.
Thanks all, and perhaps we could work together in the future. If anyone has web design, flash & Social networking experience – please email and let us review your online portfolio.

Take care,

All,

Your posts have been very inspiring to both myself and my partners. I am thoroughly enjoying this process, and envious of your talents!

Here are a few thoughts we've had and directions we'd like to see the next round of concepts:

- Focus on "Community", not just the web cam itself. We choose not to just purchase a webcam icon from a stock photo website, because we needed creative minds to merge - "People", "Community", and "webcam" into one thought. Thus far, the top picks are ones who have successfully accomplished this goal.

- IMPORTANT - We've loved your iconic concepts. But we're struggling to find the right font type & coloration. This aspect, we still don't have a clear winner. As of right now #9 "eye Catching" has an excellent font. Capitalizing "B" and "C" in BabbleCam is very attractive. In addition, we were to limiting in the past saying you must only use Blue/Orange, as we now recognize this coloration doesn't always work with all designs. Therefore we would like to also see variations in the following colorations:

- Blue/Orange
- Dark Blue / Gray gradient
- Black/dark blue

Each word in a different color works well.

I've seen some fantastic coloration in your portfolios, but not sure if I should just come out and say go to this one person's portfolio, as this may offend others.

Finally, please do not delete your entries, we want to evaluate everyone of them - and compare them to our own idea until the end of the tournament. 8 of the top 10 were not on our original top rated list - but have grown to understand the concept behind them - therefore we may need time, but a not interested could move quickly into top ranks. Please please please don't be offended. This is our first time, and we're learning how to organize & categorize properly - without offending.

Great work all.

Please note - that we would prefer the font to be gradient of - color to dark, not light to dark gradient like so many are submitting. We're looking for a subtle gradient - and not a defined line going thru the fonts.

More of an inner shadow that grows dark from the bottom, than gradient. Preferably, all the font would be opaque, and hold a solid form.

Thanks,

Hi all,

Thanks for the great Logos to date.

We would like for all to now just focus on making the Copy "BabbleCam" as the logo, and not iconic figures at this time. Using Blue and Orange, how can we make "BabbleCam" clever & familiar?

Thanks again for all the great, work. We will be very active this weekend, ranking the logos and making our final recommendations.

Have a great Friday!

FYI - We think we've finally come to the conclusion on our coloration scheme - after reviewing all your designs. We'd like to stay within the pallet colors of the Blue and Orange - in #206 , #102, & #226.

Thanks all, for the quick artwork on our sketch. They look great, and jumped to top rankings.

Then out of the blue comes EyeCatching's #245. We've always loved EyeCatching's font. But this new concept of Cam's connected in some sort of way - is an excellent concept for Babble Cam's world of Multiple Cam's connected at the same time! Way to go EyeCatching - we'd love to see it in our Blue and Orange coloration.

If anyone else has a creative way of Web Cams connecting via a bridge, or a matrix of Web cams, we'd love to see it before our contest ends!

Some information on how rankings work on this site:

How to Rank and Thank Designers: When it comes time for final rankings, designers appreciate when you choose the top three CONCEPTS (as opposed to variations of the same design) for the gold, silver and bronze awards. If you want to rank two different concepts by the same designer in the top three, that's fine.
Also, rank as many entries as possible, because designers get points added to their overall site standing for each blue ribbon they get.

This is how points are distributed:

1st place - 50 points
2nd place - 20 points
3rd place - 10 points
4-6th place - 5 points
7-10 place - 3 points

After that, each ranked entry gets one point for the designer. Nobody will be insulted by being ranked last, the points are still good! So if you pull some entries out of the "Not Interested" group and give them a rank, the designer gets some benefit from entering your contest.

Hope that's helpful, lots of contest holders don't realize this and most are glad to know. It's a good way to thank designers who don't win the contest prize, but who worked very hard to offer you lots of options to choose from for a great logo.
